Why Are Airlines Retiring Boeing 747s?

Hendrik Tennekes once said, " The Boeing 747 is the commuter train of the global village ." Little did he know that one day, 747 would stop flying at all. It's been more than 40 years. ' King of the skies ' is vanishing continuously today. American carrier Delta discontinues its last 747 in December, 2017 and thus taking the number of 747s in the US to zero. The retirement announcement spurred a wave of nostalgia for a plane that for better or worse forever changed the way people traveled. Today, a handful of operators use this majestic aircraft which includes Lufthansa, Air India, British Airways, etc. Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental Boeing started 747 family back in 1969. It was a huge achievement for Boeing. Competitors were nowhere near to beat it. Aircraft use double-deck configuration and uses four engines. This is something which had a main role in the decrement of its use. Just like Airbus A380, 747 is also fuel hungry. But unlike A380, it is a bi...

How Low Cost Carriers Make Huge Profits?

Most of us if not all have always wondered how some airlines make huge profits in spite of the low cost of their flight tickets. Well, wonder no more. Such type of carriers is known as Low-Cost Carriers. For example, Ryanair in Europe, Southwest Airlines in the US, Indigo Airlines in India, etc. So, what exactly is the business model for such an airline company? (1) It buys all their aircraft of the same type. So, it does not have to spend more resources on the training of pilots, flight attendants, maintenance and service crew. And most importantly, it can get a good deal while placing a big order from a single aircraft manufacturing company. (2) Generally, planes are on lease. So, it instantly makes a profit from the difference between purchase and lease. Because planes are bought in huge numbers, discount comes into play. And then these planes are sold to leasing companies at a higher price and taken back on lease to operate. (3) It operates from a smaller ai...

Being expensive, mainly 2 commercial airline companies; British Airways and Air France were operating Concorde. Operating cost. That was the major reason among all. Flight ticket on Concorde was so expensive that people started preferring first class on normal planes. With flight ticket costlier tha...
